When to Schedule a Lactation Consultation for Breastfeeding Help
For optimal breastfeeding success for the expecting family, breastfeeding help should be sought prenatally, but can occur at any time during the breastfeeding experience (including before pregnancy occurs).
Prenatally, your lactation consultant works with you to prepare you for breastfeeding. She’ll meet with you one-on-one to discuss what breastfeeding can look like for your family and how to achieve your breastfeeding goals. She’ll assess any barriers or booby traps that might hinder your success and help you develop a plan for navigating them. She offers several prenatal breastfeeding and parenting classes, too, such as Breastfeeding Basics and Preparing to Work and Breastfeeding.
After the birth of your baby, your lactation consultant helps get breastfeeding started. In order to help you get set up within your own environment and to decrease your running-around-town time while your body heals from birth, your lactation consultant prefers mobile in-home visits, but will also see you at one of our Lactation Clinics in Spokane, Spokane Valley, Coeur d’Alene or surrounding areas.
Should difficulties arise, your lactation consultant will work with you to determine the root cause of your breastfeeding difficulties, while developing a plan to protect your milk supply and nourish your baby, helping you to reach your breastfeeding goals.
Most insurance policies are accepted in physician-based lactation clinics and scheduling and billing services are provided by the clinic. Some insurance companies may cover lactation consultations provided in-home; it is helpful to call your insurance company to determine what coverage you may have for in-home breastfeeding help. Many health care spending accounts (HSA) or flexible spending accounts (FSA) cover lactation care, as well; depending on the account, payment may be made directly from the account without needing to request reimbursement. If we are unable to bill insurance directly for you or you prefer to self-pay, payment is expected at the time of service and you will receive a lactation visit receipt (LVR) that you may use to file a claim for reimbursement or for tax purposes.
